TIE-STALL BARN BENEFITS
Tie-stall barns have many advantages when it comes to cow comfort. This type of herd management makes possible a pro-active, individualized approach to each animal and its welfare. It results in faster response time to an animal’s needs and less reliance on medical treatments such as antibiotics.

Tie-Stall Barns
In tie stall barns cows are fed and milked in the barn. There is no walking to other buildings, as milk barn is inside the barn of cows. Each cow has its own tie stall, where stand, eat, lying down, ruminate and the animal is secured by a rope or chain. Cows do not disturb the others as they are separated by metal bars. The feed is placed in front of each cow and usually two cows use one watering place, that watering system is operated by the animal.

Pipelines are built is the barn, the pipeline of milking and vacuum is placed on the top of the stalls and running perpendicular to the tie stalls. The milk is transported in a closed system directly to the cooling machine, where it is cooled until selling. Usually trucks transport milk from farm daily to the milk industry.
The length of stall varies in different systems. In the short stall, the faeces and urine in deposited out of the stall and removed by scraping (usually mechanical). This system requires the less amount of bedding material.
This type of stalls is built in small or medium farms, usually not more than 70-90 cows are housed in tie stall barns.
Advantages of tie-stall barns
Easier to monitor:
- The feed consumption of cows. Animals are not changing place so they are fed as individuals. The probability of the fact that the genetic capacity of a cow can be expressed in performance is higher compared to free stall barn, where a more or less diverse group of cows are handled as one „feeding block”.
- The individual itself. The animal keepers see each cow more times, compared to other systems. It means that man controls cow not only during milking (three of four times per day), but at any other work in the barn. The earlier discovery of any problem means less loss of production, less occurrence of severe disease, veterinary cost decreases.
- The area for a cow is less compared to free stall barns plus milking parlour. It means less area to manage and clean.

The size of tie stalls depends on the size of cows, most of the design suggestions refers to the weight of animals. If the weight of is 400 kg, 500 kg, 600 kg, 700 kg, 800 kg the optimal width of the stall is 1050 mm, 1150 mm, 1250 mm, 1350 mm respectively.

A slight slope from the front of animals ensures the drainage and cows like to rest when the front is on higher place than the rear part. The optimal slope is two to three percent, a higher slope does not retain the bedding material and it moves to the rear and accumulates.

- Sand, as a non-organic bedding is a proper solution, but there are some factors, which limit the widespread of its application. Manure with sand is a difficult material to be properly handled and sand bed is labour intensive. The main advantage sand contains less bacteria, occurrence of mastitis is less frequent and does not harm the udder.
- Better to use Rubber mats instead of bedding mattress, comfortable type of Rubber mats Injuries are minimal and comfortable. A good quality mats are advised by several experts.
- If you will use the mattress should be strong and durable, as it has to resist the movement and pressure of hooves. The thickness of cover of theses mattresses is 3-5 millimeters; it may provide good insulation when laid on concrete floor.
Mats are also widely used and made of synthetic rubber. It is a long-lasting material and also should be covered with a thin layer bedding.
Tie-Stall Sheds
With tie stall systems, each cow is restrained in a separate stall. Feed is delivered in a trough in front of the cows. Milking usually takes place individually in the stall, by hand or machine, the latter using either a bucket or a pipeline system. Manure is collected in a gutter behind the stock. With cows tied up all year round, they can suffer from feet problems and become stiff. Hence they should be provided with an easy to clean, soft surface on which to lie down, such as rubber mats or straw. Heat detection demands more attention in tie stalls while a high incidence of trampled teats can become another problem.
Only in the case of purebred herds where considerable individual attention is given to cows can a tie-stall system be justified in tropical areas. In organic farming in Europe tie stall for cattle are forbidden because they severely limit animals in their natural behavior. If such a system is chosen, stalls and equipment can be purchased or manufactured locally. Table provides some typical dimensions.

If cows are allowed to lie with their heads over the through, otherwise add 0.4 – 0.5 m to the length. The tie and feed barrier construction must allow the cow free head movements while lying down as well as standing up, but should prevent her from stepping forward into the feed trough.
Most types of yokes restrict the cow’s movements too much. A single neck rail, set about 1,2 m high and 0.2m in over the merger may bruise the cow’s neck when she pushes forward to reach the feed. Stall partitions can be used between every second cow to prevent cows from trampling each other’s teats and to keep the cow standing straight so that the manure falls in the gutter.
As far as the cow is concerned, tie stalls are
- extremely uncomfortable and often with a hard surface
- painful with risk of inflammation of knees and hocks
- frustrating because lying down with the head constrained is more difficult and the animal cannot lie down with a stretched foreleg or with its head tucked into its front legs
- Boring because it restricts any opportunity for social contact or interaction and foraging
- Restricts the ability for each cow to self-groom itself, particularly if the tether rope or chain is too short
- Reduce lying and resting time which can lead to increased lameness
- Can lead to abnormal behavior such as swinging from side to side and shifting/moving back and forth. Many cows often stand in a dull state if not eating or otherwise stimulated.
- Can lead to more frequent occurrences of stereotypical activities, such as bar biting or tongue rolling, which disappear when animals are transferred to loose housing.
- Removes the ability for stock to find the best location in the shed for reducing climatic stresses.
- Reduces the quality of the microclimate (higher relative humidity and air ammonia concentration and lower air movement) which can lead to reduced cow comfort and performance.
- All too commonly associated with poor hygiene hence the cow is forced to lie in its own manure, thus creating additional problems with animal health and milking hygiene, such as mastitis.
- Adversely affects reproductive performance, partly because cows cannot move freely and assist in identifying other cows on heat.
- Can lead to higher teat injuries due to physical damage
- Tie stall dimensions can influence cow behavior, cleanliness and well-being
If farmers persist with tie stalls, they need to pay closer attention to stall dimensions in that:
- shorter stalls are associated with more cows with dirty hind limbs and rotated hind claws
- low tie rails can lead to more cows with neck lesions and broken tails, the latter resulting either from the tail being stepped on or forceful manipulation by the farmer
- short tie ropes or chains can lead to more swollen hocks dirty hind limbs with cows struggling to stand and lie down easily.
In summary, tie stalls are not appropriate for the well-being of milking cows and these conditions can negatively affect milk yields and cow longevity. Tie stalls have been the traditional method of maintaining dairy cows in some European countries for many decades. This has created so much public concern that certain countries, such as Norway, have recently legislated against their future use in preference to loose housing.
